Your Website is a Mission Field
In a recent study, Barna Group asked pastors and other Christians to define missions. Forty-one percent of practicing Christians surveyed defined missions as, “Proclaiming the truth of Jesus Christ wherever you are.” Among the same demographic, 19% defined missions as “The calling to proclaim the gospel to a specific people group or religion.”
As a church leader, you recognize the need for mission work, both globally and within your local church context. Fortunately, as Barna’s research suggests, so do the majority of practicing Christians.
Mission work is critical to the mission of the church, because missions is the mission of the church. The mission of the church is “proclaim the truth of Jesus Christ.”
This truth is most prominently displayed in the Great Commission of Matthew 28:16-20:
Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to thee mountain to which Jesus had directed them. And when they saw him they worshipped him, but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.
Your church fulfills the Great Commission in may ways throughout a typical week: Sunday morning worship, Sunday School, weekly small groups, children’s ministry, college ministry, one-on-one discipleship, community-focused initiatives, and much more.
But, what if you were missing a critical mission field, one that could enhance the effectiveness of every single type of mission work in which your church partakes?
That mission field is your church’s website.
In our digital age, your website is often the first encounter someone will have with your church. That’s why it’s critical to ensure your website is effectively communicating your church’s mission and vision.
